About The Gulbenkian Orchestra

Created in 1962 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and initially composed of twelve members - strings and harpsichord - the Gulbenkian Orchestra (which adopted this name in 1971) has increased to about fifty instrumentalists. The Orchestra's programme includes rarely played compositions, and works quite unknown to the general public and also a great number first performances of works of contemporary composers, foreign and Portuguese, many of which are expressly commisioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
