Green Day is an American punk rock trio formed in 1986. The band has consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion) for the majority of its existence. Green Day was originally part of the punk rock scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street, Berkeley in East Bay, CA, United States. Larry Livemore (owner of Lookout! Records) signed the group to his label in 1988. According to Livemore, The band adopted the name "Green Day", due to their fondness for cannabis. In 1994 the song "Dookie" became a breakout success and shipped over 10 million copies in the U.S. "21st Century Breakdown" was the band's greatest chart performance achievement in 2009. In total, Green Day has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, Won 5 Grammy Awards and even nominated for 3 "Tony Awards" for "American Idiot" stage adaptation which debuted on Broadway.
