It was January 10, 1994, music fans all over the world heard ‘Your Ghost’ for the first time as it was playing constantly on MTV. Featuring R.E.M.’s singer, Michael Stipe, It was the popular song taken form Kristin Hersh’s debut solo album, ‘Hips and Makers’ after her work with ‘Throwing Muses’.
Hersh’s album was (and still is) minimalistic and beautiful. Including arrangements for an acoustic guitar (played by Hersh) and cello (played by Jane Scarpantoni). It was the one the few indie albums that were a breath of fresh air taken from all the major rock and pop drama of the 1990’s. And ‘Your Ghost’ is the perfect example.
Besides Hersh’s deep melody by and the fantastic vocals by Michael Stipe (Just as he always delivers), it’s the songs lyrics that hits the spot, portraying that moment you tremendously miss somebody, and yet can’t help to but feeling that maybe that love is not for you. ״If I walk down this hallway, tonight, It's too quiet”, She sings, “So I Pad through the dark, and call you on the phone, Push your old numbers, and let your house ring, till I wake your ghost.”
Another thing about the song’s lyrics is what it means reading them today. They capture the human relationship in a time that longer exits. No one pushes numbers on the phone anymore, and there’s no phone in the house, if there is - no one really calls it. It’s a normal behaviour that not only makes the song dramatic, but also keeps it in a beautiful time frame.
After that first album, Hersh continued working hard, putting out more and more solo records, fronting the band 50FOOTWAVE, and also successfully publishing her own books and essays. Most popular would be the ’Rat Girl’ memoir, and last one called, ‘Don’t Suck, Don’t Die’ about the late musician Vic Chesnutt.
If you read Hersh’s printed words and listen to her music, you’ll be able to see how it all connects to each other. It almost seems like every little thought she has in her head is brought to creation. Her website is a good proof too, as unlike a lot of other artists out there, she’ll posts the little thoughts on her mind or agenda. Dive into it. Read, play and let it ring.
