Michael Jackson Wins: 'Thriller' Is Now the First Album to Sell 30 Million Copies

The Recording Industry Association of America, in Association With the Singer's Estate and Record Labels, Confirmed the News. The Record Has Sold More Than 100 Million Copies Worldwide and Claimed That Jackson Had Sold 1 Billion Albums Total

It’s Official: Michael Jackson’s classic album, ’Thriller’ was certified today (Dec. 16) as the first album in history to sell more than 30 million copies in the United States. 

This landmark album was released in 1982 and produced by Quincy Jones. 6 years after his death, Jackson’s music is just getting bigger. Reports say that ‘Thriller’ was sold in more than a 100 million copies worldwide, as Jackson holds more than a 1 billion record sales from his entire catalog.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine: “The Recording Industry Association of America, in association with the singer's estate and record labels, confirmed the news Wednesday.

"RIAA has awarded gold and platinum records on behalf of the music business for nearly 60 years, but this is the first time an artist has crossed the 30 times multi-platinum plateau," Cary Sherman, RIAA chairman and CEO, said in a statement.
